«The Birds» by Conor McPherson,
from a story by Daphne du Maurier
Directed by Kyle Jones
Audition Dates and Times:
August 21 and 22 at 7pm
Las Vegas Little Theatre 3920 Schiff Drive
All roles are available.
DIANE (Female, 30s-50s)
A novelist who is keeping a record of the deteriorating world in her diary. She appears to be sweet, lonely and clear-headed, but she has great hidden strength and determination, especially when itcomes to protecting her territory, which includes NAT. The matriarch and leader of the group.
JULIA (Female, Early 20s)
A seemingly sweet young woman who has been involved in previous dubious circumstances to survive. Brave and tenacious, she is also attracted to NAT, which ruins the equilibrium of the threesome.
NAT (Male, Late 20’s — Early 40’s)
Vulnerable and prone to psychological breaks, due to a messy family break-up, he does not have the clearest head in a crisis. However, he is the only one who believes that kindness can exist in the face of all the dangers, both internal and external.
TIERNEY (Male, Late 40’s-50’s)
Tierney is a farmer. He is brash and to the point; a bit of an eccentric, but is longing for companionship. Physically imposing and mildly intimidating in nature.
Auditions will consist of cold readings from the script. Headshots and resumes are accepted but are not required.
Daphne du Maurier’s short story, also the basis for Alfred Hitchcock’s classic film, is boldly adapted by Conor McPherson—a gripping, unsettling, and moving look at human relationships in the face of societal collapse. In an isolated house, strangers Nat and Diane take shelter from relentless masses of attacking birds. They find relative sanctuary but not comfort or peace; there’s no electricity, little food, and a nearby neighbor may still be alive and watching them. Another refugee, the young and attractive Julia, arrives with some news of the outside world, but her presence also brings discord.
October 20 — November 5, 2017 with performances on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays at 8pm and Sundays at 2pm. There is an additional Saturday matinee at 2pm on October 28.
Rehearsals begin August 29.
